I live in far eastern Kentucky so I don’t deal with tornado weather often(thankfully). But my family’s property was moderately damaged by a tornado in 2011. I’m 28 now, my grandparents are passed and my parents are in their 60’s. I take care of the property myself, and as I’ve gotten older I’ve become more and more afraid of tornadoes. So when I have the money, I plan to build a dedicated underground tornado shelter. It’ll be built straight into the side of a mountain, just big enough for maybe 5-10 people to squeeze into. It will have cinderblock exterior walls and inside that will be essentially a welded steel box with a vault door, ventilation and some drinking water I’ll keep up to date regularly. I think if you live anywhere in America, you should have a shelter like this. If you can’t afford it on your own then look to your neighbors and see if you could go in on it together. Too many strong tornadoes in this country to trust a house no matter how well it’s built.

The city really just up and told people to buy their own shelters when these people probably can't afford such a thing and said "I missed the part where that is my problem". Please remember, your citizens can't pay their taxes if they're dead.

I have read that some tornado sirens overheat and burn out if they run continuously. Therefore so are turned off intermittently during an emergency. It can be a deadly mistake to assume the treat has passed. The sirens are to warn those OUTSIDE away from broadcast sources of warning not for those indoors. Always check your weather app, NOAA radio, other radio or weather report before assuming anything. And NEVER go to a window or outside to look. A cell phone is your friend. Post script: I 💕 🐱 🐱

Cats have an almost psychic ability to get out of a jam, but I learned many times that cats stay with their stuff unless impossible. After finding my escaped 10 year old tough ginger guy in a locked storage container for 3 weeks, incredibly surving on mice, the ER vet put it well-Never, ever count a cat out. ❤ They said to prepare for him to die of fatty liver disease from lack of water. Sigh. He lived 4 more years perfectly healthy until he again escaped when I had moved back into the Canadian wilderness, and he heard the door shut and not click. Did I mention how wily he was? He was taken out by a coyote at 14, because he forgot that he was old and not fast anymore. He died as he lived-fighting like hell to do exactly as he pleased. He was also very loving and I will always miss him. 🐈
